What is Clip to OneNote?

Clip to OneNote is a free Firefox/Thunderbird add-on which helps to send text, pictures and other data to Microsoft Office OneNote with a single click.

Microsoft Office OneNote, is a software package for free-form information gathering. Firefox add-on for collecting data to OneNote (similar to that of IE) is missing, which is a handicap for IE users who want to switch to Firefox. Hence this add on tries to over come this and there by gives Firefox more flexibility and OneNote users an enriched experience with Firefox.

Ok I would like to try, what are the requirements? where to start?

Thanks for trying out this add-on. Hope you like it.

Requirements

You must have the following recommended settings:

  • The latest version of firefox which you can download at getfirefox.com
  • Microsoft Office OneNote (any version)

Download

You can head on to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12003/ download the add-on.

Setup

To make this add-on work you have to set the path to onenote.exe correctly.
View the above video or follow these steps. Goto Tools->Add-ons->Clip to OneNote and then select the onenote.exe file path from there. ( Not just the directory, the complete file path. It might look something like: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ONENOTE.EXE )

Use

You can collect data while browsing by selecting the part and clicking the "Clip to Onenote" option which is available in three places:

  • As right click context menu
  • In the edit menu.
  • As a tool bar icon.
Shortcuts

As per user request, shortcut keys are added from version 2.0 onwards for ease of access. Two shortcuts are available. First one is Alt+Ctrl+L or you can access from edit menu by pressing Alt+E and when edit menu pops out Press L

  • You can send selected portion of a web page (as shown in the above video) and click clip to OneNote to save that selection.
  • If you have not selected any text, the entire page will be clipped to one note. (not recommended - may take much time)
The process of clipping is using clipboard as medium of transfer. Hence the content of clipboard will be replaced with the clipped content every time you use this add-on.

Can I change the destination where the notes are saved?

Yes. Follow the instructions below:

  • Open Microsoft Office OneNote
  • Goto Tools -> Options
  • Select Save from the Category pane on the right-hand side.
  • Under the section "Paths" you can modify the destination of un-filed noted section.

Why dosen't Firefox's inbuilt 'Check for Updates' not providing updates for your add-on?

This add-on is still in the Sandbox, which means it will show up in listings and searches at addons.mozilla.org, but Updates are not being provided to this add-on through the update check service via Firefox. Only your comments and suggestions will make it as a public addon.
You can join the Facebook page (by clicking on 'like' button found below) to receive notification if the add-on is updated.

I can't download Clip to OneNote and I am receiving installation errors such as..

For error -207: Firefox could not install the file at .. Not a valid install package -207 or Firefox could not install the file at .. because: Invalid file hash (possible download corruption)

It is to be noted that these errors occur because of Firefox's mirrors servers and not because of the add-on itself. (It will occur only to a add-on in sandbox and not to a public add-on).

There are two ways to rectify it. First and recommended method is to logging into https://addons.mozilla.org site (if you don't have a account, you have to create one) and then trying to download.

Second method is to download from my server here. Then you can open it in Firefox via File->Open file to install it.

For error -203: If above solution doesn't work for you, you have a problem with your Firefox and this is what you should do about it:

Troubleshoot : Add-on not working!

There can be many reasons why Clip to OneNote may not work. To troubleshoot :

  • Please Check whether you have installed the add-on correctly. Try reinstalling. Check question "I can't download Clip to OneNote and I am receiving installation errors such as.." regarding installation errors.
  • First check whether you have set the path of OneNote.exe correctly in options box. For more information see "where to start?"
  • Check whether the default IE add-on is working. If not then the problem is with OneNote's installation. You have to either repair OneNote installation or contact Microsoft's tech support.
  • Try the add-on with a portable Firefox installation. If it is working in a portable version then the problem is in your Firefox installation. You have to reinstall your Firefox.

If you still can't get it right, then contact me at onenote [ at ] madharasan.com with your:

  • Your problem description
  • Firefox version
  • Microsoft office version
  • Operating system
